Colic!

With the short supply of hay in the area we have seen a large number of colic cases recently. Colic refers to abdominal and pain ranges in severity.

ALWAYS TREAT COLIC AS AN EMERGENCY.

Regardless of the severity of signs colic should always be treated as an emergency. Early intervention is critical.

Some simple things you can do to check and pass onto your vet include:

  • Observe clinical signs
  • Pawing
  • Rolling
  • Stretching
  • Distress
  • Poo! Has any been passed?

Triggers

  • Feed type?
  • Have you changed feed recently?
  • Is the hay mouldy?
  • Do you live in a sandy area?
  • Horses dental history?

All of these things among many others are useful info for your vet.

Never feed or medicate without your vet’s approval.

Transport

Do you have a plan in case your horse requires referral

Remember slow diet changes are vital for prevention of certain types of colic.
